i noticed this, too. it seems fairly recently... and it was almost 'out-of-body'. i've heard it's called 'sleep paralysis'. or rather, when a person wakes up in the morning, are mentally awake and alert, yet can't seem to make themselves move. i've had this before. kind of freaky, but really cool, too. it only lasted for a minute or two. ah, the strange, quirky shell we call home.
Such self awareness is rather rare, and yes, there are chemical and hormonal changes as you slip into deep sleep. Most people don't notice this particular stage, and others suffer from insomnia as they can't seem but to help moving about when they get to this step.
