can you request that your personal medical records are sent to you personally, as opposed to getting them sent to your new doctor, when you shift to a new location?..i live in New ZealandMedical Records..who owns them?
Yes, at least in the States. Don't know about New Zealand's policies, but I assume they are the same or very similar. Your medical records are yours; you have the right to have them, see, have them mailed to you, or have them sent your new doctor. You'll probably have to fill out some sort of waiver or sign something, but it shouldn't be a problem as long as YOU are trying to get YOUR records.
You own the information in the records in the U.S. You should be able to at least have a copy of the records sent to you but you will be charged (at least in the US)
Without a doubt they are YOUR records. Your doctor has a responsibility to keep a copy at their office, but you can certainly ask for them. Not sure about the procedures in New Zealand, but here in the U.S. you can ask for your medical records to be sent to you. But it'll cost you, sometimes 50 cents a page. They will send it to you doctor for free, but we get penalized financially if we want our own records. Good luck!
